Dr. Raymond “Ray” Dyer, a devoted husband, loving father, and globally respected professor in Radiology, passed away on November 29, 2025 at the age of 72 in Winston-Salem, NC. He leaves behind a professional legacy built on training hundreds of radiology residents and providing compassionate care to his thousands of patients over his four-decade career at Wake Forest University School of Medicine.
The late LTC Joseph A. Dyer, USA (Ret.) and Lucille T. Dyer (Botticello) expected a baby girl to be named Carol and born on Christmas Day. What they got was “Next Day Ray” born on December 26, 1952 in Raleigh, NC. As a child, Ray beat a cancer diagnosis using an experimental radiation treatment which was seminal in his decision to pursue a career in medicine. Ray grew up in Annandale, VA with two brothers (Jody and Lynn) who he loved dearly. He attended Annandale High School where he played football and met many friends that he stayed in touch with until his death. He went on to earn a medical degree from the University of Virginia and continued his medical education as a resident in diagnostic radiology. Ray not only left the University of Virginia with a prestigious medical education but also with the love of his life, Susanna Neal Dyer. Ray married Susanna in 1977 and moved to Winston-Salem to become a physician at Wake Forest Bowman Gray School of Medicine where he spent his entire career. Ray and Susanna had two children, Christopher Raymond Dyer and Richard Townsend Dyer. Ray was a committed father who loved nothing more than spending time with his boys and never missed an opportunity to lovingly share his life lesson quips. In his free time, Ray loved fishing of any type and rooted for his University of Virginia Cavaliers and Wake Forest Demon Deacons.
Dr. Dyer dedicated almost 40 years of service to Wake Forest University, where he rose to become a Professor of Radiology with stints as Vice Chairman of the Department of Radiology, Medical Director of the Outpatient Imaging Center, and Medical Director of the School of Special Procedures Technology among many other educational and leadership roles. He was renowned for his expertise in abdominal imaging with emphasis on the genitourinary system and to his commitment to teaching the next generations of physicians via resident education. His crowning achievement was receiving the Society of Abdominal Radiology’s (SAR) Gold Medal in March 2020. He retired as an Emeritus Professor in 2021 but maintained an active role as a mentor and friend.
Ray is survived by his wife of 48 years, Susanna Dyer, of Winston-Salem; his children, Christopher Dyer (Rachel) of Winston-Salem, and Richard Dyer (Samantha) of Hampstead, NC; his beloved grandchildren, Davis Dyer, Graylyn Dyer and Theodore Dyer; and his brothers, Joseph Dyer (Ella) of Atlanta, GA and Lynn Dyer of Homerville, GA. He was preceded in death by his father, LTC Joseph Dyer, USA (Ret.), mother, Lucille Botticello, stepmother, Shirley Dyer, and stepfather, Daniel Botticello.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, December 13 at Vogler Funeral & Cremations at Forsyth Memorial Park (3815 Yadkinville Rd, Winston-Salem, NC 27106) followed by visitation at the same location.
