Winston Salem, NC – Mrs. Virginia “Ginger/Gigi” Ewing, 80, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 14, 2025. She was born on August 13, 1944 in Savannah, GA to the late James Gadi Timbs and Virginia Cassels “Gina” Timbs.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Thomas “Tommy” Timbs.
She is survived by her husband, Meredyth “Hem” Hanway Ewing, Jr., brother James “Bubba” Timbs, son Meredyth “Scout” Hanway Ewing, III and his wife Whitney Merrill (Moore) Ewing, son Spencer Cassels Ewing and his wife Diana (Jermann) Ewing, as well as her three grandchildren: Jackson Wainwright Ewing (17), Weston Stokes Ewing (15) and Lily Beatrice Ewing (13).
Ginger attended St. Margaret’s School, Tappahannock, and was graduated from Mary Baldwin College in Stanton, VA, and from the Katherine Gibb’s School in New York.
Ginger started her career in administration for the Rockefeller Foundation and carried on several positions of a similar nature through her professional career including Russell Reynolds Associates. She taught Lamaze for several years out of her Park Slope brownstone home.
In her spare time, she enjoyed participating in the community through the Colonial Dames Society, The Junior League, as well as local garden clubs, book clubs and serving on the alter guild at Christ and Holy Trinity in Westport, CT. She was an avid reader and was always on the lookout for the interests of people she knew, sending them clippings from the New York Times with some regularity. Ginger had a soft spot for animals and children and always managed to make both parties feel special. As a young mother, she proudly participated a, groundbreaking at the time, early childhood development study in her community. She had several faithful animal companions, namely a beagle named “Chuck”, a series of dachshunds named “Demitas”, and a kitty named “Fritzy”. One of her most endearing characteristics was her love of greeting cards, her collection of witty and hilarious cards survives her. Her favorite music was from the 50’s and 60’s, Chuck Barry and Buddy Holly. Ginger loved the water and swam most days, even into October in the northeast, swimming off Compo Beach.
As a young mother, Ginger educated her sons about art and they have fond memories of weekends spent at MOMA and the Natural History Museum in New York City.
The family would like to thank Gigi’s care givers in her final years, they made it possible for her to remain with her husband amid her familiar surroundings.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Vogler Funeral at Forsyth Memorial Park, 3815 Yadkinville Rd, Winston Salem, NC 27106, on Sunday, January 26th at 2:30pm. All who remember her fondly are welcome.
