

WINFREE WINSTON-SALEM - Mr. Wallace Martin Winfree, 88, died January 4, 2011, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. A memorial service will be held Thursday, January 6 at 2:00 p.m., at Highland Presbyterian Church with Reverend Randy Harris officiating. A private inurnment will be held at Forsyth Memorial Park.
He was born in Alexandria, VA to Harry V. and Aubrey Mae Martin Winfree and grew up in Dumfries, VA. He served in the Marine Corps during WWII in the South Pacific. After graduating from VPI (VA Tech), he came to Winston-Salem to work for Northup & O'Brien as a structural engineer. He remained with the successors of that firm for over 35 years assisting in the design of many Winston-Salem landmarks, including Forsyth Hospital. In 1949, he married Flora Ann Nowell, his devoted wife of 61 years. He was a member of Highland Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon and for many years as a head usher. Mr. Winfree volunteered for Meals on Wheels, the Samaritan Soup Kitchen and Contact Telephone Crisis Line.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by four children, Wallace Martin Winfree, Jr. of Biloxi, MS, Alison Pickrell of Statesville, Tom Winfree of Winston-Salem, and Julie Kovasckitz, of Charlotte; one brother, Milton S. Winfree; ten grandchildren, one great grandchild and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Henry V. Winfree, Jr. and James P. Winfree and one sister, Lillian W. Black.
