Donald Burress

Donnie was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, on March 9, 1946. He was the beloved husband of Diane, whom he married on November 17, 1990.

Donnie was a hardworking man who spent his career in automobile paint and body repair and proudly owned his own business, Don’s Paint and Body. He was also a proud Army veteran and carried his military service with him as an important part of his life and identity.

But to those who loved him most, Donnie was so much more than his work. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.

Donnie had a lifelong love of music, especially the music of Hank Williams. If there was an opportunity to sing or play, Donnie was ready. He could be found performing at the South Florida Fair, singing at a birthday party, or simply sitting at home with his guitar. He was a member of the Florida Country Music Association and loved singing, playing guitar, and playing the gut bucket bass. Music wasn’t simply something Donnie enjoyed—it was a part of who he was.

He was also the family’s unofficial Mr. Fix-It. If something broke, Donnie was going to try to fix it. And sometimes, even when everyone else thought it might be time to throw something away, Donnie wasn’t quite ready to give up on it. He believed that with a little patience, a few tools, and enough determination, almost anything could be made to work again.

That same patience and willingness to help extended beyond his own family. Donnie was the kind of friend who showed up when someone needed him. If a friend was in trouble or needed a helping hand, he was there. He didn’t need any recognition for it. Helping people was simply something he did.

His greatest pride, however, was his family. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Diane, and a loving dad who was incredibly proud of his daughter, Andrea, and his son-in-law, Kevin. He adored his grandsons, Owen and Emmett, and treasured the time he spent with them. One of their special memories will always be sitting together while Papaw taught them how to play solitaire—a simple game that became a special piece of their childhood and a memory they will carry with them.

He also opened his heart and his home to those who became family along the way. Samantha was his goddaughter, whom he loved as one of his own.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ora and Hollie; his older brother, Mitchell “Paul”; and his twin brother, Ronnie.

He leaves behind his beloved wife; his daughter and son-in-law; his two grandsons; his sister, Juanita; and his goddaughter, along with countless friends and extended family members whose lives were made better by knowing him.

In his final days, he was surrounded by the people who loved him most. His family remained by his side, holding his hands, sharing memories, and filling the room with some of his favorite songs.

As his final moments came, his family remained close. His wife was there with him, and his daughter held his hand and sang the words of his favorite songs to him, just as he had spent a lifetime singing them for others. And when it was time for him to go, she sang him home.

For a man who spent his life singing and playing the songs he loved, there was something beautiful about sending him home surrounded by his family and his music.

Donnie may be gone from our sight, but his songs, his stories, his stubborn determination, his helping hands, and the love he gave his family will continue to live on in all of us.
