Frances Muriel Duncan Arey. June 23, 1924- July 23, 2019
Muriel Duncan Arey died on July 23, 2019 at the Superior Residence in Clermont, Florida after a long illness. Muriel grew up in Leesburg and was a granddaughter of H. H. Duncan, one of the founders of Lake County. She graduated from Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg VA in 1946, majoring in Voice.
In 1951, Muriel married recently widowed Phil Arey of Montverde and bravely took on helping to raise his 5 children and her own daughter Lynn. The Arey family continued to live in Montverde in their home on Lake Florence for 20 more years.
In 1972, having raised their combined family, Muriel and Phil moved overseas so Phil could work in Africa. Over a span of 5 years, they first lived in Rome and then Johannesburg. Muriel loved living in Rome and learned to speak Italian. They enjoyed living in the international community of Johannesburg where they made several good friends.
In 1978 Muriel and Phil retired in Clermont and continued their lifelong membership in the Methodist Church. Muriel sang in choirs wherever she lived, and continued her passion for singing in the Methodist Church Choir in Clermont. Choir members from her church recently honored her by singing at her 95th Birthday Celebration.
Muriel was an active member of PEO and belonged to the HG chapter in Clermont. She also played bridge with a group of friends for many years. She was an avid crossword puzzler, solving puzzles daily until her recent illness.
Muriel was preceded in death by her husband Phil, her sister Joan, son John and daughter Lynn. She is survived by sister Gail Kinney, daughters Carolyn Schriemer, Kathy Koester, Marion Paulk and Jan Arey, 5 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
The family suggests that those wishing to make memorial gifts give to the Cornerstone Hospice or the Clermont Methodist Church Choir.
