

Born in Lakeland, one of eight children, growing up in the Beacon Hill neighborhood. She was a member of the first graduating class of St. Joseph's Academy and Lakeland Senior High School. She attended Lakeland Business Institute. Her parents owned a grocery store on South Florida Avenue until the depression. Betty met the love of her life, Julian, a Winter Haven native, at a San Bernardino Airbase dance in California. They were married over 62 years until his death.
Betty Lou was a member of Beymer United Methodist Church and Susannah Wesley Circle. A past President of the Gardenia Garden Club, Flower Show Chairwoman, Florida Club, Lake Region Yacht and Country Club. She was a den mother and co-leader of Girl Scouts. She enjoyed motor homing, house boating, fishing and fish frys with friends and family. She would love to find a good bargain and try new restaurants. She loved to play bridge with her friends and enjoyed many "girl" trips with them.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Mary Josephine (Scanlon) lserhardt, husband, Julian A Johnston, Jr., her son, J. Armour Johnston III, her seven siblings, and two great granddaughters. She is survived by her two daughters, Diane (Bill) Slaybaugh and Patricia (Rodney) Chauncey, three grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and several loving nieces and nephews.
Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Charity of your choice in her memory.
