Gabriel "Gabe" Allende
June 17, 1925 – May 5, 2019
Gabriel (Gabe) Allende, 93, of Winter Haven, FL, passed away May 5, 2019. He was born June 17, 1925 in NYC, NY. Gabe is survived by his wife Sue Allende, his sister Mary Kanian, his four children Laura Allende, Lucille Velander, Manny (Antonia) Allende and Christine Beardsley, 6 grandchildren CJ and Dana Velander, Thomas & Teddy Beardsley and Michael & Celine Allende, his 2 step children Rhonda (Norm) Shotwell and Ted (Cindy) Hodges. Gabe was preceded by his parents, Manuel Martin Allende & Maria Jerez Allende, his first wife Mamie Allende, his siblings Albert and John Guiteras, Lucy Mazzoli, and his son in law Tom Beardsley.
Gabe lived a long and fruitful life. Growing up in Manhattan, he was a lifeguard at his local YMCA, where he was also a competitive diver. When war came he enlisted in the Army, where he served with honors in WWII, and upon returning from the European theatre, attended both Syracuse University and the University of Bridgeport, earning an engineering degree. Gabe worked for many years at Armstrong Rubber, before leaving engineering, and moving onto a very rewarding career in teaching and coaching (golf & JV football) at Norwalk High School in CT. Since his retirement Gabe received many comments from former students letting him know how much his teaching helped them in their lives.
In his retirement, Gabe was an avid golfer and enjoyed travelling. Gabe has always been gregarious and found many friends wherever he lived.
A memorial service will be held at 1130 on Saturday, 18 May, 2019 at the Ott-Laughlin Funeral Home, 645 W Central Ave, Winter Haven, FL 33880. Interment will be performed separately at Florida National Cemetery 6502 SW 102nd Ave, Bushnell, FL 33513
