Born on October 11, 1950, James was the son of the late Lucielle Hamm and Wilbur Jones. He graduated from Winter Haven Senior High School in 1968 and went on to build a life centered on faith, family, service, and community. In 1982, he married the love of his life, Susan Jones, and together they shared many years of devotion and cherished memories.

A longtime Charter Member of Parkland Baptist Church, James faithfully served his church and community in countless ways. He was active in softball, served as a Brownie leader for Beymer's Brownie Troop during the 1980s, and after retirement volunteered with the Polk County School Board, the Salvation Army, the Upward Soccer Program, and numerous ministries and activities at Parkland Baptist Church.
James found his greatest joy in spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He never missed an opportunity to attend their sporting events and celebrate their accomplishments. He also enjoyed traveling, hunting, fishing, and volunteering. His love of the outdoors drew him to the mountains, and some of his favorite adventures included trips to Alaska, the Midwest, and Canada.
