Melvin Clarence Martin

Melvin Clarence Martin, 77, passed away peacefully on July 31, 2026. He was born on December 14, 1948, in West Point, Arkansas, to Frank and Emma Martin. He was raised in Trumann, Arkansas, alongside his many brothers and sisters, where he learned the values of family, hard work, and perseverance that would guide him throughout his life.

After graduating from high school, Melvin answered the call to serve his country by joining the military. During his distinguished 20-year career, he proudly served in both the United States Army and the United States Navy. A decorated veteran, Melvin earned the respect of those around him through his unwavering dedication, integrity, and commitment to service.

While stationed at a military base in Monmouth, New Jersey, Melvin met the love of his life, Deloris Fisher. Their meeting began a beautiful journey that would span more than 56 years of marriage, filled with love, partnership, and countless cherished memories. Together they built a life centered on family, faith, and shared adventures.

Following his military retirement, Melvin and Deloris made their home in Norfolk, Virginia. There, Melvin built a successful career selling Hyundai automobiles for more than 20 years, a profession that allowed him to connect with people and form lasting relationships. Outside of work, he and Deloris enjoyed traveling together, creating memories wherever they went. They especially loved cruising, taking historical road trips, visiting casinos, fishing, bowling, cheering on their favorite sports teams, and simply enjoying each other's company.

Melvin firmly believed in the power of education and the importance of understanding history. He never missed an opportunity to encourage his children, grandchildren, and the younger members of his family to learn, grow, and appreciate the lessons of the past. His wisdom, guidance, and passion for knowledge left a lasting impact on generations of his family. His Christian faith as a Southern Baptist was an important foundation throughout his life.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Deloris F. Martin; his daughters, Kimberly Bibbens and Christina Davis; his son, Marcus Fisher; his sister, Shirley Martin; his brothers, Carl Ray Martin, Henry Martin, and Rickey Martin; along with numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, extended family members, and dear friends who will forever cherish his memory.

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Emma Martin; his sisters, Exie Washington, Carrie Mitchell, and Gloria Knighton; and his brothers, Rufus "Pete" Martin, James "Jack" Martin, and Alonzo "Lonzo" Martin.

More than his many accomplishments, Melvin will be remembered for the deep love he had for his family, the pride he took in serving his country, and the values he instilled in everyone fortunate enough to know him. His life was a testament to dedication, loyalty, kindness, and the importance of cherishing the people we love.

Though we mourn his passing, we also celebrate a life well lived. The lessons he taught, the stories he shared, and the love he gave will continue to live on in the hearts of his family and all who were fortunate enough to know him.

May we honor Melvin's memory by carrying forward the values he cherished and by remembering the example of a life lived with purpose, service, and love.

A funeral service celebrating Melvin's life will be held on Friday, August 14, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Ott-Laughlin Funeral Home in Winter Haven, Florida.

A graveside service with full Military Honors will follow that afternoon at 1:30 p.m. at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida.
