Sonja Ann Farrer

March 29, 1938May 22, 2018

Sonja Ann Farrer, 80, of Bartow, FL, died May 22, 2018 with her family by her side at Good Shepherd Hospice House, Lakeland, FL.

She was born on March 29, 1938, the only daughter of Clyde Franklin and Rachel Mitchell Sanders, in Greenfield, TN. At the age of 10, God gave her a vision of the map of Africa and called her to be a missionary. The family later moved to Lansing, Michigan where she graduated from high school. Her next step in following God’s call on her life was to attend Southeastern Bible College in Lakeland, Florida. At Southeastern, she met her husband, James Farrer, of almost 54 years. Together, they served as missionaries in Africa for 15 years. Their state-side service encompassed an additional 35 years, and included pastoring in North Carolina, Tennessee, and Florida, with the last 27 years of ministry at New Life Assembly of God Church in Wahneta, Florida.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, James Leo Farrer; two daughters, Rhonda Farrer (Partner: Mel Wallace); Hannah Farrer Moore (Spouse: Russell Moore); one son, Mark Farrer (Spouse: Amber Farrer); and a large and loving family including grandchildren: Chris, Faith, Victoria, Ethan, Christopher, Noah, Zoe, C.J., Leanna, and Jadyn; and the great-grandchildren: Emma, Johnathan, and Ezra.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clyde and Rachel Sanders; brothers: Billy Frank, Sam, Skip, and Stan.

Sonja was 14 and I was a three-year old second-cousin at the Sanders family reunion in 1952 at the home of her father, the late Clyde Sanders. He was a brother of my grandfather Bennett Sanders, and was Uncle Clyde to my mother Margaret (Sanders) Martin and to her sisters Sue, Ruth, and Mary Sanders. Mary recorded in her diary every nice phone call she received from cousin Sonja over the years, and especially appreciated Sonja's visit to Greenfield in May 2007 just after James Virley Sanders, Mary's brother and Sonja's first cousin, passed away in Orlando. To Sonja's family and loved ones, please accept my personal sympathy for your loss and sadness, and condolences also on behalf of Sonja's first cousin and my mother, Margaret (Sanders) Martin.

In 1971, I met my new Mom whom with my new Dad adopted me in North Carolina. It's amazing how over the years my offspring and I have melded so well with or non-genetic family. We don't share the same DNA (although we truly favor in so many aspects), but we share so much more. I am so lucky that they chose to love me, care for me, put up with me, never give up on me, even though I am not thier natural born daughter. My Mother was a Stern but Loving woman, and I am missing her terribly.

Thank you for all your love and support during this very difficult time, it has meant the world to us.
