During her high school years she was very active in sports, i.e., Softball, Basketball, and Field Hockey. She also served as one of 4 Valedictorian speakers at High School Graduation. In her junior year of High School she applied for a part time job with Pennsylvania Company Bank in Philadelphia. She was hired and spent both school and summer vacations there as a clerk in the Bookkeeping department.
She continued with the bank job during 4 years while attending the Ivy League University of Pennsylvania where she majored in Political Science. Upon graduation she was promoted to a teller position at the bank’s branch in Ardmore, PA. Also at Penn, and as former Girl Scout, she qualified for the Scouts Service Group and met her future husband, James J. Hopes, at one of the events. They married February 14, 1953 (Valentine’s Day) and she spent a year and a half with her husband during his service in the US Army at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma.
After the birth of 1st child (Richard) in 1955 she became a “home mother”, a role she truly loved, and soon had a 2nd child (James) in 1957, and 3rd child (Deborah) in 1960. She took care and raised all 3 children at home while also serving on various church, local, political, and community organizations. The family lived in different communities over the years including Broomall, PA, Norwalk, CT, and Scotch Plains, NJ. She also served as President of the College Club in Scotch Plains for 2 years to raise funds for young women to attend college. She is also survived by two granddaughters Laura and Leslie.
She enjoyed knitting, needlepoint, and crochet pastimes over the years and donated hundreds of handmade quilts, hats, scarves, and items to charities and those in need.
Her fondest memories are the vacations she spent for over 60 years at the Manno family residences in Wildwood Crest, NJ, and also during later return visits to the area after retirement. Her first visit to Wildwood was in 1929 as a 3 month old baby and she made a visit 89 years later to the same beaches and Boardwalk in 2018 with her husband and children to celebrate life and good times together!
When husband, Jim, retired from his job in 1995 they moved to Florida where they began to enjoy cruising and took over 70 cruises seeing much of the world. There are some years they booked 3 or 4 cruises, often traveling with their children, and enjoyed each experience living, laughing, and loving at
sea.
In lieu of flowers the family is requesting that donations be made by check, noting "In Memory of Angela Hopes", to the Fanwood-Scotch Plains College Club, where she was a former President and raised money for so many young women to attend college. Checks should be mailed to:
