Dee was born on December 19th, 1933, and grew up on a farm outside Lansing, MI as the sixth of seven children. With a brave and independent spirit, she left the farming community for nursing school. While there she was introduced to her husband, Bruce Douglas, through a blind date. She and Bruce married in 1955 and soon began a life of adventure, spending their first years together living on the East Coast, the West Coast, and in Japan.
They settled in Toledo, OH where they raised three children and were active members of their community. Throughout their marriage, Dee and Bruce also spent chapters in Sterling, KS and Toledo Beach (Monroe County), MI before retiring in Winter Park, FL.
She loved a good, friendly competition, whether on the tennis court with friends or at the game table with her family. Her love of animals was another constant, and over the years the home was seldom without a dog.
Dee was also passionate and deeply involved in the causes and faith communities that mattered to her, most notably Heartbeat of Toledo, where she volunteered for many years and served as Executive Director. But she was most proud of the legacy she left in her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her son Peter (Deanne), daughters Susan (Steve) Struna and Anne Lewis, along with seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 66 years, Bruce, and by an infant daughter, Mary.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Heartbeat of Toledo via heartbeatoftoledo.org.
