Obituary of Dorotea C. Jaranilla
Dorotea Caldo Jaranilla, born April 4, 1923, passed peacefully on July 30, 2022 in her family home in Winter Park, Florida. Born to Catalina Rementilla Caldo and Alejandro Caldo in Anabu, Imus, Cavite, Philippines, she is affectionately known to most as Aling Doray or Nanay Da. She was married to Ernesto Jaleco Jaranilla, Sr in 1945. She raised her four children, Ernesto Jr., Ofelia, Julius, and Ederlina in their ancestral home in the Philippines until she migrated to the United States in 1974. In Florida, she worked for Jacobson’s for 12 years until she retired. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and aunt, and spent her time surrounded by family. Whether it was just a regular Sunday or a big holiday, she was always cooking big batches of food to enjoy in each other’s company along with good stories and laughter. Always gracious and generous, she always had food to share and room for one more at her table. She brought out the beauty in ordinary things in her sewing projects. A talented seamstress, she sewed clothes for her grandchildren and embellished and embroidered everyday items like dish towels with her own style and flair. She loved making things beautiful with what she had. She also loved the outdoors, spending her time cultivating her many gardens in all the corners of the world she has lived —Florida, Washington, and her beloved Philippines. Under her careful attention, her flowers, especially her orchids, bloomed. She always shared her bountiful harvests of fruits and vegetables. On the weekends, she loved to be by the Atlantic ocean with family and friends, patiently waiting for her next big catch! While she lived in the United States for most of her life, she is well-loved and will be missed by many, especially her family and friends in the Philippines. Preceding her in death were her three siblings: Emiliano, Mariano, and Concepcion. She is survived by her four children and their spouses Charles, Deowarsky, Merle, and Grace, her grandchildren Alexandra, Michael, Jennifer, Anna, Theresa, Elmer, and Kean, and her great-granddaughter, Christina, and the countless relatives and friends she has touched throughout her life. We take comfort in knowing that Nanay Da is now at peace surrounded by light.
