Dr. Harry Stanley McAbee, 93, of Orlando, went to be with the Lord on November 1, 2018 in the comfort of his own home. He was born July 19, 1925 in Piedmont, Alabama to Thomas McAbee and Pauline Young.

He enlisted in the Marines at the age of 17 and served his country in World War II. Following his service, he attended Auburn University and studied Veterinary Medicine. While attending Auburn, he met his future wife, Jacquelyn Yon, and the rest is history. The two married and their journey led them to Orlando where Harry opened McAbee Veterinary Hospital and practiced his love for animals for nearly 40 years.

Harry’s involvement in the community is one to be noted. He was a founding member of the Rotary Club of Orange County East-Winter Park and recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a founding member of the Veterinary Emergency Clinic of Central Florida. One thing that defined Harry was his strong faith in God; he was a member of the Aloma United Methodist Church for 50 years.

He enjoyed teaching the Alpha Program. He, along with several friends, brought the Alpha Program to the Salvation Army for over seven years. This small group was instrumental in turning around the lives of several men who had lost all hope. He also enjoyed playing golf, tennis, tending to his grapevines, watching his Auburn Tigers play- War Eagle, studying the Bible, and spending time with his growing family.

Harry had a personality like no other. There was no such thing as a stranger. He always greeted others with a gleaming smile and will be remembered for his strong faith in God, his radiating kindness, compassion, and the legacy he has left behind.

Harry is preceded in death by his wife of over 60 years Jacquelyn McAbee, his parents, Thomas and Pauline, his brother, Thomas McAbee, his daughter, Lee Ann McAbee, and his daughter-in-law, Terri McAbee, He is survived by his 5 children; Lynn Bryant, Jeff McAbee, Cindy McAbee, Scott McAbee, and Shannon Manning; his 10 grandchildren; and his 8 great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 5:00pm until 8:00pm at Baldwin-Fairchild Goldenrod on Friday, November 9. Funeral services for Harry will be at Aloma United Methodist Church in Winter Park on Saturday, November 10 at 11:00am. Harry will be laid to rest at Greenwood Cemetery in Orlando, Florida.

The family would like to express a special thank you to Vitas and The Bridge for the care you gave to Harry.

Memorial Donations may be made to The Rotary Foundation of Orange County East at PO Box 1566, Winter Park, FL 32789.

We enjoyed a visit from Dr. McAbee when we brought our dogs over to the Bridge. He really enjoyed being around animals. He was friendly and had a warm smile. We'll miss him.

Harry, the best grandfather I could’ve asked for, will be greatly missed. He taught us all so much and will leave behind a great legacy. Some of my favorite memories with him were stopping in to see him and listening to his many stories. One of my favorites was how he met Nanee, his wife. He had asked one of his friends to set him up on a blind date, his friend gave him the names of two girls. Harry chose the girl with last name “Yon” in hopes she was an Oriental girl. Well she wasn’t but the rest is history! Another one of my favorite stories was about when he was pledging at his fraternity at Auburn, he had to take Miss. Auburn out on a date in order to be initiated. I’ll never forget how he would tell everyone at his facility that I was a “beauty queen” whenever I would come in and visit. I’d laugh and say “Harry, I was the homecoming queen!” Not quite a beauty queen. He was always so proud. I miss you so much Harry! Love you forever.
