Born on August 20, 1926 in Orange NJ to Edwin P. Sr and Mabel Leflar Granberry. He was raised in Winter Park and was a proud Eagle Scout. After graduating from Winter Park High School, he joined the Navy at the start of WWII and fought in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater commanding the USS LST 585 and receiving medals for campaigns in the Philippines, Borneo and South China.
After leaving the Navy he attended Rollins College receiving a BS in chemistry and later an MBA in Aviation Safety from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University. In his career he worked in chemistry for Minute Maid, as a weapons system engineer for the Martin Company and for the Pan American, Aerospace Services division in Cape Canaveral where he was heavily involved in the early years of the space program. He was the Task Unit Commander for the recovery of Mercury 8 and 9, and Launch Safety Officer for the Poseidon and Polaris missile programs. He was responsible for worldwide Pan Am safety programs traveling extensively in Africa, Asia and South America where he lived in Brazil. In 1972 he worked for United Technologies Corp, Pratt and Whitney Aircraft in Palm Beach FL as the Manager of safety engineering and then was transferred to their plant in San Jose CA as a Safety Project Manager. As the Corporate Safety Director for Controlled Demolition Inc he was involved in high profile building implosion site safety. He was very active in the American Society of Safety Engineers and was elected to their highest position of Fellow in 2000. He was a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemists, a Fellow of the American College of Forensic Examiners and a Fellow of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute. He was a member of the Restoration Advisory Board for the U.S. Navy Training Center in Orlando and through his own consulting company of Granberry & Associates, he provided expert opinions and services until his final illness.
Ed is survived by his wife of 32 years, Joanne Bianchini Granberry, his children, Melissa Pranke, Edwin Granberry III, James, Jennifer Valderrama and step-daughter Claudia Nunn. His grandchildren are Cecelia Moore, Jarrod Valderrama and Jessica and Adam Pranke and great granddaughters, Emma and Lennon Moore. He was predeceased by his two younger brothers, Julian and Hal.
