He was born in Nashville, Georgia on December 27, 1921, to the late Talley Columbus Mathis and Maude Ellen (DeVane) Mathis.
He served his country in the United States Army during WWII as a Aircraft/Diesel Techincian. He ultimately retired after a long career with Orange County Public Schools.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Sarah Evelyn (Lott) Mathis, and son, Elwood Eugene Mathis Jr.
He is survived by his daughter Sarah Rebecca (Mathis) Reinhard and son, Jack Russel Mathis Sr., as well as multiple grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren
A visitation for Elwood will be held Sunday, May 29, 2022 from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM at Baldwin Fairchild Funeral Home, 7520 Aloma Avenue, Winter Park, Florida with funeral services at 10:30 am. Interment with military honors will follow the service in Chapel Hill Cemetery, 2400 Harrell Road, Orlando, Florida.
