

Eugene “Gene” L. Roberts Sr., 86, Maitland, Fla., died peacefully at home Thursday, June 6. Husband of Betty, he had eight children, 16 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Gene was born in Elvins, Mo., and grew up in Farmington, Mo. At 17, he enlisted in the Navy, serving in the Pacific as a radar operator in World War II. Upon discharge, he enrolled at Washington Univ., St. Louis, earning his electrical engineering degree. His distinguished career included jobs with the federal government and with corporations in New York City and Chicago. In 1962, he moved to Central Florida to work for Martin Marietta. He held multiple patents for his designs, several of which remain classified. After retirement, he focused on his large family, genealogy research and travel. His sons Dale and Mark preceded him in death. Survivors include wife, Betty; children Gene Jr., Lisa, Kevin, Sandy, Steve and George.
His life will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Monday at the First Presbyterian Church, Maitland. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the church.
