Herminda graduated from high school as valedictorian and carried on the Jumawid family’s tradition of education. She received a Bachelor of Science in Education degree from the University of San Carlos in Cebu, Philippines and began her career teaching at Southern Capital College. She taught classes in Mathematics, Spanish and Physical Education. Larry joined the United States Navy and later returned to the Philippines, where he married his high school sweetheart, Herminda, in 1962. Following their marriage, Herminda and Larry moved to the United States. His military career took them to Newport, RI; Long Beach, CA; Albany, GA; and Key West, FL, before they finally settled in Orlando, FL.
Herminda’s passion for education and service eventually compelled her to return to school to pursue a new career in nursing, which led to staff positions in obstetrics at Orlando Regional Medical Center and the Naval Hospital in Orlando. Her more than three decades of service reflected her dedication, compassion, and commitment to caring for others.
Together with her Husband, Larry, Herminda was active in the Filipino Community as one of the founders of the Oroquieta Charity Foundation and President of the VisMinda Association of Florida. She was also one of the founders of the Filipino Ministry of St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, and she served as Lay Carmelite and Eucharistic Minister.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Herminda found happiness in the simple pleasures of life. She loved cake decorating, ceramics, gardening, flower arranging, and crocheting, expressing her creativity through the many beautiful things she made. Ever the generous and thoughtful gift-giver, Herminda also enjoyed shopping at Macy’s, often in search of gifts for friends and family, and dining at Olive Garden.
Herminda will be remembered for her generosity, the many years she devoted to caring for others professionally and in her personal life, her creative spirit, and the enduring love she gave her family. Though she will be deeply missed, her memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her, and in the generations who will continue to carry her legacy forward.
