John was born in South Hill, Virginia and moved within the year to Cross City, Florida. After graduating from Dixie County High, John attended University of Florida’s Pharmacy School where he earned a Bachelor of Pharmacy in 1952. He joined the Air Force and served as a pharmacist at the Wiesbaden Hospital. His primary assignment was to create a formulary for the USAF Hospital.
When John left the Air Force, he moved to Orlando, Florida. In 1956, he purchased Orlando Pharmacy located on North Orange Avenue near Lake Ivanhoe. In 1958, the pharmacy moved to its current location on North Orange Avenue at Clay Street. For the last 60 years, John has been active in the Florida Pharmaceutical Association, serving as president from 1972-1973 and receiving its James H. Beal award twice. He and his wife, Jane, worked diligently to enhance pharmacy as a profession, encouraging young students and professionals.
John demonstrated his love for God with his commitment to North Park Baptist Church where he and Jane married in 1956. He was an active Sunday School teacher, deacon, and financial advisor for nearly his entire life at North Park. John and his dear friend, Dr. Robert Kersten, travelled to Central and South America on mission trips where they worked to improve the health of communities by providing needed medications and clean drinking water. Their love for these trips encouraged the young men of North Park to follow them on a mission to Honduras in 1976.
If you would like to honor John’s memory, the family requests that donations be made to North Park Baptist Church, 2047 Prospect Ave., Orlando, FL 32814 or Florida Pharmacy Foundation Scholarship Fund, 610 North Adams Street, Tallahassee, FL or http://flpharmfound.org
