Kirk was born on July 26, 1947, on a United States Air Force base in Germany shortly after World War II. In 1959, his family moved to Winter Park, Florida, and later settled in Chuluota in 1989, where he spent the remainder of his life.
He graduated from Winter Park High School and proudly served his country after enlisting in the United States Navy at the age of 18. During his military service, he had the opportunity to travel throughout the world, creating experiences that helped shape his lifelong curiosity about history and politics.
Following his military service, Kirk dedicated his career to education after earning his master's degree from the University of Central Florida. As an American History teacher at Oviedo High School in Seminole County Public Schools, he was a beloved educator until his retirement at the age of 57. He took great pride in helping young people and made a lasting impact on countless students throughout his career.
Kirk was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Pauline Slegel; his brother, John Slegel; and his great-nephew, Johnathan VanDorn.
He is survived by his loving daughter, Brandi Zrallack; his son-in-law, Tom Zrallack Jr.; his cherished grandsons, Thomas Zrallack III and Colby Zrallack; his brother, Duane Slegel, and his wife, Cindy; his nieces, Jeni Whitehead and her husband, Jim, and Danielle Slegel; and his great-niece, Jena Whitehead.
Kirk had a passion for music, especially classic rock, and loved everything about living in Florida. He enjoyed spending time at the beach, with the Florida Keys holding a special place in his heart. He was a loyal sports fan who cheered for the Miami Dolphins, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Jacksonville Jaguars, and the Orlando Magic. He also faithfully supported Florida's college football and basketball teams each season. Every year he looked forward to Daytona Bike Week, and he always enjoyed traveling out West whenever he had the chance. His love of history and politics remained with him throughout his life, and he could spend hours reading, learning, and discussing both.
More than anything, Kirk was a devoted son, a loving father, and a proud grandfather. His family brought him his greatest joy, and the memories they shared together will be treasured forever. He will be remembered for his independent spirit, his sense of humor, his love of learning, and his appreciation for life's simple pleasures.
A private celebration of Kirk's life will be held at Lake Mills Park at a later date.
