Margaret Louise Hubbard Vickers, of Winter Park, FL, passed away on July 10, 2026. Margaret was born April 17, 1931, to McCoy and Hattie Mae (Brooks) Hubbard, who were living in Porto Alegre, Brazil, at the time of her birth. After spending the next eleven years in Brazil, where McCoy worked as an electrical engineer, the Hubbards moved back to the USA during World War II. The family lived in Alexandria, VA, then Mobile, AL, where Margaret graduated from high school in 1948.
Margaret then enrolled at Florida Southern College in Lakeland, FL, graduating as class valedictorian, with a BA in Education, in December 1951. She married her college sweetheart, James Hall Vickers, on June 7, 1952. They chose to begin their married life in Orlando, FL, halfway between Jim’s hometown of Jacksonville, FL, and Margaret’s family roots around Bradenton, FL. They welcomed three daughters during the 1950s, Mary Sue, Nancy, and Holly. After Jim’s military service in Fort Belvoir, VA, (1954 – 1956), the couple settled in Winter Park, FL.
As a career educator, Margaret served as a classroom teacher for Orange County Public Schools for 30 years. Most of her tenure was as a 7th grade English teacher at Glenridge Middle (Jr. High) School. Margaret loved teaching and introduced her students to Shakespeare, Charles Dickens, and poetry. In the 1970s, she returned to the classroom herself and earned a Master of Education degree from UCF.
When she retired from teaching in 1991, Margaret stepped happily into babysitting her youngest grandchild, Kenny, who was just 3 months old. Being blessed with seven grandchildren all living within walking distance, Margaret and Jim were very involved and supportive grandparents. When the youngest started school and Margaret had more free time, she started working as an ADDitions Volunteer at Brookshire Elementary School, which she continued to do long after the grandchildren had moved on to middle and high school.
Margaret was an avid reader; she loved mysteries and nonfiction. She enjoyed being in a neighborhood book club, playing games, and bowling on a teachers’ bowling league. She was a prolific letter writer and kept a journal throughout her life. She understood the importance of keeping physically fit, so she bicycled to and from work at Glenridge instead of driving. In retirement, she joined the Wellness Center and took exercise classes there several days a week. She attended church and Sunday school faithfully at the First United Methodist Church of Winter Park, where she was a member for 70 years.
Margaret was preceded in death by Jim, her beloved husband of 60 years; her parents; and her sister, Ann Hubbard Hill. She is survived by her daughters and their spouses, Mary Sue and George Perreault, Nancy and Robert Constant, and Holly and Mark Cooper, all of Winter Park; seven grandchildren and their spouses, Mary Beth Constant and Sean Mize, Michael Constant, James V. and Kristen Perreault, Nicole and Jeremiah Jackson, Holly and Daniel Stoner, Maggie and Joshua Hayes, and Kenneth and Bethany Cooper; and ten great-grandchildren, James V. Jr., Charles, Luc, Remy, Felix, Hattie, Lillian, Henry, Maisie and Max.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Alabama Oaks Assisted Living Community for the tender loving care given to Margaret during her final years and to VITAS Hospice for their expert palliative care in Margaret’s last months.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 1, 2026, at 12:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Winter Park, 125 N. Interlachen Avenue, Winter Park, FL 32789.
