Mildred Woodward Hiegel (Woody) died May 1st, 2012 at her home in the North Florida Retirement Village. Mildred was born October 20, 1921 in Aiken, South Carolina, second daughter to Marie Coward Woodward and Davis Ashley Woodward. The family moved to Winter Park, Florida in 1925 , then a small college town. The sisters attended Florida State College for Women in Tallahassee, and were members of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority. Mildred married James Anthony Hiegel, also of Winter Park, in 1942. After the war the Hiegels had a construction business in Winter Park. When James, a commissioned naval reserve officer was recalled to active duty during Korea, the decision was made to stay in the Navy. Mildred loved the challenges of moving, adapting, and experiencing new cultures. Her attitude was that her family was so lucky to be living wherever they found themselves, and that this place was the best place to be in the world. She was a charming and gracious person who enjoyed her life, her family, and her friends.
Mildred is survived by her two daughters, Jamie Hiegel Leier and Cathy Hiegel Key; her son-in-law James C. Key, and grandchildren; Victoria Anne Leier, Daniel Tucker Key, and Jacob Davis Key, and her sister, Mrs. Courtland Berry, nieces and their families. Predeceased are husband, James Anthony Hiegel (d.1998) and daughter, Nancy Anne Hiegel (d.1963).
A gravedside service will be held on Saturday May 5, 2012 11:00 AM at the Palm Cemetery in Winter Park.
