On 6th, November, 2018 at 6:22pm at Johns Creek, Georgia Rosie M. Holmes Mitchell was summoned to glory.
She was born to the late Henry and Velma Holmes on July 22, 1932. She was reared in a God fearing home and received Jesus Christ as her Savior. She was baptized when she was eight years old. Her dad, a deacon at an early age assisted Rev. Eugen Powell in her baptism.
She attended and graduated from F P Richard Elementary School and McDonogh #35 High School in New Orleans with honors.
She matriculated at Xavier University in New Orleans, LA, but later transferred to Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana where she graduated cum laude and received a BA degree in Education. At Southern University she sang in the Southern Sorority and was a member of the Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society.
Rosie did graduate studies at Elizabethtown College in Harrisburg, PA and at the University of Virginia.
Rosie was Principal and teacher in Plaquemine Parish for three years. Then she accepted a position with the United States Army as a Program Director for the enlisted personnel at Camp Leroy Johnson in New Orleans, LA for five years.
At Camp Leroy Johnson she met and married her late husband, Harvey P. Mitchell. Later, they were transferred to New Cumberland Army Depot in Pennsylvania. Their daughter was born in Harrisburg, PA. Rosie taught school in the area for three years.
They were transferred to Fort Wainwright Army base in Fairbanks, Alaska. Again, Rosie was employed by the Army by the US Army as a Program Director. From Alaska, they were transferred to Virginia where she taught school ten years in Alexandria, VA. Was a member of Downtown Baptist Church.
The family moved to Winter Park, FL in January 1979. Rosie taught school ten years at Brookshire and Aloma Elementary schools. She retired in June 1994.
She joined Aloma Baptist Church in 1980 to the present. Her ministry passion was singing and she was a member of the choir for many years.
Rosie also was a member of Thurlow Spurr’s concert choir. They sang at the Dove Awards in Nashville, Tennessee in 1984. She was also a member of the Messiah Choir Society for ten years that was directed by Dr. John Sinclair of Rollins College.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Holmes Sr. and Velma Holmes; siblings Amos Holmes, Avon Holmes Sr., Ellen Holmes, John Edward Holmes (all from New Orleans), and Dorothy Holmes of Dallas, Texas, Henry Holmes, Jr. of Gulfport MS and Anne Holmes and Catherine Cade of Dallas, TX.
To cherish her memories her daughter Mechelle Harrison and son-in-law, Todd Harrison. Three grandchildren, Bethany, Michael, and Jordan of Suwanee, Georgia. One sister: Helen Jordan of Stafford, VA; and one brother Eugene Holmes Sr. of New Orleans LA., plus scores of nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
Visitation for family and friends will be 12 PM at Aloma Church with Funeral Services to follow at 1 PM. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery.
