She was born in Grays, Long Island in the Bahamas on May 12, 1937 to Cosdale and Pearl Wells.
She is survived by her brother, Lindy Wells, daughter, Sandra Duncanson, her son Alexander Cartwright and his wife Melinda Cartwright, her daughter-in-law Katie Cartwright, her grandchildren, Alyssa and Andrew Cartwright, James and Jonathan Duncanson, and Olivia Musgrove. She was preceded in death by her son Addison Cartwright, Jr., two brothers, Willis Wells and Thadeus Wells, and her husband Everette Fosdyck and ex-husband Addison Cartwright, Sr.
Verna attended school in Long Island, The Bahamas, until 6th grade. Married at 17, she and her husband moved to Nassau, Bahamas. She immigrated to the US in 1983, and lived in Tipton, Iowa, when she married her second husband Everette Fosdyck.
Although her education was limited to 6th grade in the Bahamas, she was always intellectually curious and a strong believer in the power of education. As an adult she obtained her general education diploma from Kirkwood Community College. Anyone who met her immediately would recognize her keen intellect that was accompanied by remarkable compassion and care.
