Henry was raised on a farm outside of Carrot River. He attended school in Charmfield from grade one to grade ten and then went on to Rosthern Junior College for grades 11 and 12. Dad told us many stories about his childhood and times at Rosthern, including playing sports with his siblings, hitchhiking to Saskatoon, and buying a motorcycle. He always had a love for adventure and travel!
Dad knew early on that he wasn’t interested in farming so went to school to become a teacher. He first taught in northern Saskatchewan but then moved south to teach at Gray Valley near Montmartre. This is where Dad met our Mom, Eva. He converted from Mennonite to Catholicism and they were married on June 30th 1953. Again, Dad’s love of travel sent them off to Ontario where they lived for one year. They returned to Saskatchewan and Dad took a teaching job at Mayerling School where they lived happily for ten years and had three children. When the new Montmartre School opened, they moved to town and had three more children.
Dad taught history and English to 7th and 8th graders. Over his many years living in Montmartre, Dad made many life-long friendships. He had a strong love of community and spent countless hours volunteering at the skating rink, the park, the golf course, and our church. In many ways, the skating rink was our second home. Dad loved sports and spent many hours playing, watching, and coaching. He also loved getting together with friends, gardening, daydreaming, playing cards, and watching the news. Dad retired from teaching in 1983 at the age of 52, which allowed him many years of relaxation, travel, and spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
After retiring from teaching, he became the Manager for Sask Housing in Montmartre, which he did for 22 years. Dad and Mom also loved to winter in Laughlin and Las Vegas, NV and did so for many years. In his later years, he spent even more time golfing, playing badminton, and walking every day.
Dad had a number of health issues but always recovered and was able to live to 95 years. He would say prayer, socializing, eating well, and exercising are the keys to a long life. In the last few years as he began to experience more health problems, Dad would often say ‘Life is just great!’ Dad lived his life with kindness, generosity, faith, and curiosity. He liked to say “Wave at everyone, be happy.” He will be greatly missed by all who loved and adored him!
Henry was predeceased by his son Howard, daughter-in-law Darla, infant sister Helena, parents, and brothers: Jon, Peter, Frank and Beno.
