Marjorie McMorris passed away on September 6, 2019. She was a resident in the Balcarres Integrated Care Centre since April 2014 and had lived the previous sixty years on her beloved farm in the RM of Abernethy. She was born in the Abernethy area to English settlers Harry and Nellie Page on December 9, 1922.
She joined the Royal Canadian Air Force Women’s Division in 1943. She also took her secretary training in Mossbank, SK for the Armed Forces. She spent her 21st birthday on Dec. 9, 1943 on a troop carrier crossing the North Atlantic. Peggy (Marjorie) and five other women worked out of Harrod’s Department Store (an excellent cover) where she had full responsibility for keeping track of the RCAF boys. There were 17,038 women who served in the RCAF-WD. 1450 WD’s were sent to England, Peggy being one of them. Peggy returned to Canada in 1945 aboard the Cunard Liner the Queen Elizabeth which had been a troop carrier. On this particular ship was where she met Allan McMorris.
She and Allan were married on November 28, 1946. She and Allan lived together on the family farm along with their two sons Garry and Dennis. Peggy loved farm life and especially recording all the information about the cows and calves and grain prices in the recordation book. She also spent a lot of time caring for her flowers which gave her pleasure. Peggy was a member of the Gillespie Sunshine Club, Abernethy Agriculture Society and the UCW of Abernethy. Marjorie (Peggy) was first and foremost a farmerette. She truly enjoyed music and dancing. Achievements she was most proud of were her perennial flower garden, purebred cattle raised on the farm, her sons’ achievements and her grandsons. Another love of hers was chocolate of any kind and type.
Marjorie (Peggy) was predeceased by her parents; her husband Allan; her sisters Mildred and Helen, her brothers Bill and Fred; and nephew Brian. She is survived by her sons, Garry (Bonnie) and Dennis (Donna) McMorris; two grandchildren, Trevor (Christine) and Ryan (Tara) McMorris; six great-grandchildren Ashtyn, Sienna, Mila, Bailey, Gracie and Jack, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family acknowledges and appreciates the help and care given to Marjorie (Peggy) or as the staff called her (Pegster) at the Balcarres Integrated Care Centre over the last five years.
