Patrick's Eulogy:
Pat was a giver, a teacher and a leader! He gave freely of his knowledge. He gave freely of his time. He often gave to those in need if he could afford it. Pat was a giver.
He could be quiet and reserved or he could be energetic and engaging. Whether to enlighten a conversation, or motivate his students.
His happiness came from doing for others, so they could learn and grow and be the best they could be.
Teaching and leading was his calling. He grew up helping others through his leading his peers in Boy Scouts. As a young boy he embraced the Anglican Church and took part in Sunday, School and Choir. Later on in Richmond, BC, he taught Sunday School. Patrick was an avid reader. He did not own a TV...
I'll say it again. He did not own a TV...that is not to say that he didn't enjoy a good movie, but he was not a consumer of pop culture other than the Harry Potter Movies. He did enjoy researching and viewing educational things on YouTube. Reading was a passion, from Shakespeare to Harry Potter. As a young boy he read our set of Encyclopedias cover to cover. He read the Bible written in Hebrew and he studied the Greek language. He had a Degree from the University of Manitoba and another from UBC. He was a scholar......and knowledge was his gift he shared with his students and those who knew him. He loved to share his knowledge and he was a good conversationalist.
Growing up in Moosomin, he had began gardening and learning about plants and flowers. A nature walk with him was a tutorial in trees and plants and nature in general. Camping and hiking were other passions of his that he loved to share with family and friends. He was an expert at chopping wood with an ax and building wonderful campfires for cooking.
When we moved to British Columbia in the 1970's his love of plants and nature were only compounded. He and my mother and dad, worked together taking care of a massive vegetable and flower garden. Pat learned about our family history when he traveled to England and Scotland on his own in his early 20's. He spent two months living in London and exploring the city and it's many museums.
Pat's entrepreneurial skills started young. He saved his allowance and bought a lawn mower as a young teenager. He began mowing lawns to make money in Moosomin and Esterhazy. He worked with our dad in the Lumber Yard when we moved to British Columbia. When he moved to Winnipeg to attend university, he worked at a record warehouse and Hy's restaurant. No one helped pay his way. He lived in his own apartment without a tv and with very little furniture. He lived frugally and paid is tuition and bills.
When he returned to Vancouver after our father passed away, he worked at the Richmond Inn Hotel as he continued with school at the University of British Columbia. Pat enjoyed being home in British Columbia and he was glad to be there to help my widowed mother.
Pat built a successful tutoring business in Vancouver and he tutored new Canadian Immigrants in English and all subjects, from elementary age to University level. Some students began with him at a young age and he was able to help them graduate from University.
When he moved back Saskatchewan, he began teaching at Moosomin and on reserves. He adopted a Reservation dog and named her Rez. He also raised one of Rez's puppies Atim. He loved his dogs.. He found a home on the Ocean Man Reservation. He found it very challenging and rewarding at the same time.
He enjoyed giving back to the community of Ocean Man. He loved teaching and helping his students learn. He loved taking part in the all the community events at Ocean.
Patrick was a giver. His legacy is one of being a giver, which in turn gave him happiness and personal fulfillment. We remember Patrick as a giver.....a teacher.....and a leader.
