Ruth Mary Glydon

January 23, 1927July 1, 2021

Ruth Glydon passed peacefully in her sleep on July 1, 2021, at Fiddick's Nursing Home in Petrolia, Ontario, with her daughter Marjorie and granddaughter Tami Langstaff, her Essential Caregivers, by her side. She was 94 years old.

Ruth was kind and generous and made an impact on everyone she met. She had strength of character which made it possible to overcome considerable adversity at various times during her life. She was unfiltered with a great sense of humour and a hearty laugh.

Ruth was married in 1947 to Wesley Glydon. They were Saskatchewan farmers for over 50 years and worked tirelessly to provide opportunities for their children. A strong co-operator, Ruth was involved in numerous community organizations and activities in Saskatchewan, including being a local 4-H leader, Guild member, lifetime member of the Windthorst Horticultural Society, etc.

Ruth left Saskatchewan in 2015 and moved to Ontario to be with her daughter and grandchildren. She was the cherished Matriarch, and was included in all the family activities, events and celebrations. She loved playing cards, making puzzles and doing crafts! Highlights were gatherings with family, shopping with her daughter, gardening and baking with her granddaughter. A self-professed 'news junkie', she loved magazines, newspapers, television and books.

Her family will accompany her back to Saskatchewan, where she will be laid to rest beside Wes, who predeceased her eight years ago. Beloved by her children, Marjorie Glydon-Crowe in Ontario, Lyle Glydon in Saskatchewan, and Beverly (Terry) Nash in BC, her 8 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren. Forever missing her is her loving sister, Dorothy (Art) Vessey in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Ruth was predeceased by all her brothers.

Ruth will be sorely missed by her family and caregivers who spent precious time with her in Ontario. A very special Thank You to Ken Langstaff (Tami), grandson-in-law, who was constantly involved in Grandma's activities and care. Thank You to all the staff at Fiddick's who cared for Ruth with kindness and compassion while she resided there.

As her request, cremation has taken place. Arrangements were entrusted to Tubman's Funeral Home in Kipling, Saskatchewan and Smith Funeral Home in Sarnia, Ontario.

Respecting Ruth's wishes, in lieu of flowers or contributions, she would like you to do a Random Act of Kindness for a stranger, give your loved ones a big hug, and get your vaccines!

Her indomitable and effervescent spirit will shine on in those who loved her. She will always be remembered.

Growing up on the farm near Ruth and Wes, I remember their huge garden and kindness with every visit. My fondest memory was shelling peas and Ruth teaching me to pop them open and shoot the pea across the room instead of into the pail! It was a blast! She is sadly missed and part of an amazing generation.

I would like to extend the sympathies of all of the Gibbs Family here.
The Glydons are a big part of my memory of the Windthorst/Kipling connection for my family who started out “just down the road”.
Ruth Glydon was such a memorable, warm, loving woman that I sense no one could forget her after having met her.
A true Matriarch; a true representative of all of the good in the iconic figure of a Farming Woman, wife, partner, mother and friend.
My parents Denys and June Gibbs counted Ruth and Wes as dear friends. I know they would share my tears today at the loss of such a good woman.

Eric here, our sympathies to Marjorie, Lyle and Bev and extended families on the passing of your mom.

The Widdup’s and Glydons were such good friends dating back to when my dad Leslie and your dad Wes were just youngsters. I remember the Sunday family get togethers and my time as a youngster spent at the Glydon farm. As a child I took a shine to your moms gooseberry jam and later in life she would often remind me of that fact. She was proud of her garden and preserves, rightly so as she produced a lot. Lyle and I had fun working on the old Ford flat head V8. The old model T truck was such a novelty and both dad and I admired Wes for having preserved it through the years. The blue VW beetle was as novelty too. I remember one fun afternoon when Bev and I went joying riding in the old bug exploring all the back roads. All great memories.

As I see the for sale sign at the end of the Glydon lane I realize that an era has come to an end. Everything changes with time but for those of us, at our age, we have many great memories to enjoy.
