Shirley was predeceased by her husband Fred (July 1995), sisters Florence Hartman, Louise Fettes, son-in-law William Maier and grand-children Jordan Doucette, Amanda Dixon and great grand-child Austin Gwilliam.
Shirley is survived by her siblings Peggy Tetarenko, Art Ransom, Gerald Ransom and Geraldine Schmidt, children David (Helen), Terry (Carol), Sharon, Lloyd (Phyllis), Doreen (David), Debbie, Joyce and Dawn and numerous grand-children and great grand-children.
Shirley and Fred spent the bulk of their child rearing years, from 1955 to 1994, in the village of Summerberry, Saskatchewan. While there Shirley performed the role of CPR Station Agent, and sometime after it closed, the Post Mistress for Canada Post. Shirley cherished the role of Post Mistress the most as it allowed her to visit, chat and share the local news with the many residents of Summerberry and the surrounding farming community. After Fred’s retirement they moved to Grenfell to fulfil their retirement years, however Fred’s dream of a long blissful retirement was short lived when he passed away in 1995. Shirley went on to enjoy her years in Grenfell sharing many fun filled happy moments with her lifelong friends, while staying even closer to her children and growing population of grandchildren. An avid quilter she was sure to provide a new quilt for any new offspring, or donation for a good cause.
In 2011 Shirley’s health declined and she became a resident of the Grenfell Pioneer Nursing Home. While there she was always an inspiration for staff and residents combined. Of course she loved that two of her daughters worked there. Everyone was sure to be met with a welcoming smile and a willing ear regarding any news or updates of local happenings. If you wanted to know what was going on room # 4 certainly had the latest news, update or commentary – oddly enough even faster than today’s social media. Sadly, the Grenfell Pioneer Home closed in 2018, however Shirley continued to offer her cheerful smile, loving “hello,” and reassuring ear to the staff and residents at Lakeside Nursing Home in Wolseley.
Many thanks go out to the loving care that Shirley received at both facilities – Grenfell Pioneer Home and Lakeside Nursing Home. The staff was very caring and many of them, if not her family, became her family and close companions in her final journey through life. For that she, and her family, will always be thankful.
A private family service will be held with interment in the Summerberry Cemetery, Summerberry, Saskatchewan.
In lieu of other tributes, donations may be made to one of Shirley’s favourite causes Souls Harbour Rescue Mission, 1632 Angue Street, Regina, SK S4T 1Z2.
