He was a member of the ROTC in high school. He was married in 1955 to the love of his life, Patricia (Pat) Jean Hunt, from Denver, Colorado. He enlisted in the Army in 1956 and was stationed in Germany while serving as a Military Police Officer. Pat joined him in Germany and their two daughters were born there. While in the service, he enjoyed contributing original single panel cartoons printed in the Army Chronicle Post.
