Daniel Gerard Porwoll, age 64, of Maplewood, Minnesota, passed away on April 21, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family after a lifetime marked by remarkable resilience, quiet strength, and deep devotion to those he loved.
Born on June 2, 1961, in Minnesota, to Edward Porwoll, a teacher, and MaryLee Porwoll, a nurse, Dan was a graduate of Rosemount High School. From an early age, he faced significant health challenges, being diagnosed with diabetes at just two years old. By early childhood, Dan was already administering his own daily insulin shots. In 1991, he received a life-changing gift when his sister Joanne selflessly donated a kidney to him. For 35 years, Dan cherished that precious gift and took exceptional care of it. Though he never knew a day of perfect health, he faced every obstacle with unwavering determination and grace, inspiring all who knew him.
Dan found great joy in life’s simpler pleasures. An avid largemouth bass angler, he earned the affectionate nickname “The Fish Whisperer” among his friends. Time and again, he would reel in fish after fish while others around him caught nothing often using the same bait in the same spots. In his younger years, he was a pretty great hockey goalie when playing with his buddies. There were very few MN Wild games that he didn't tune into over the years. He was also a talented woodworker whose meticulous craftsmanship produced beautiful furniture that will be treasured by his family for generations. A lifelong train enthusiast, he took genuine delight in the hobbies that brought him peace and satisfaction.
Above all, Dan was a devoted family man. He cherished his nearly 39-year marriage to his beloved wife, Debra, and took immense pride in his roles as husband, father, Grampa, and Great-Grampy. His infectious humor and sharp wit could light up any room, and his quiet encouragement reminded everyone around him to count their blessings and recognize that others often face even greater trials.
Dan was preceded in death by his father, Edward Porwoll.
He is survived by his loving wife, Debra Porwoll; his mother, MaryLee; his children, Heather (John) and Jarred (Sue); his grandchildren, Amber, Emma (Andrew), Rachel, Christopher, and Joseph; and his great-granddaughter, Charlotte. He is also survived by his sisters, Mary Pat (Rick) and Joanne; his brothers, John (Jenny), Dave (Karen), and Christian; mother-in-law Marjorie (Charles) Barton, and many beloved nieces, nephews, and friends.
A man of deep Christian faith, Dan lived as a powerful example of perseverance and gratitude. He trusted firmly in God’s love and often pointed others toward hope even in difficult times. His life was a testament to the strength that comes from faith, family, and an enduring spirit.
Funeral Services will be held on Monday, May 4, 2026 at North Haven Church, 2240 15th Ave E, North St Paul, MN 55109 at 11:00 am and visitation beginning at 10:00 am. Entombment will be held at Union Cemetery, Maplewood, MN.
Dan will be profoundly missed by all whose lives he touched. May he rest in eternal peace in the presence of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Until we meet again.'
