David was preceded in death by his mother Harriet Johnson, father Merritt Johnson and his favorite dog, Lady. He is survived by his wife Sandra Sue (Scott) Johnson, his sister Karen (Harold) Berry and his three children: Michael (Ranee) Johnson, Kevin Johnson and Kelly (Matthew) Kalis; and six grandchildren: Katherine, Kaeden, Ryan, Makena, Kyler and Jace.
David graduated from Michigan Tech University with a master's degree in Chemical Engineering. He served in the U.S. Air Force including a tour of duty in Vietnam in 1969. He worked for 32 years as an engineer for the 3M Corporation. He served his community through various positions at Mounds Park United Methodist Church as well as volunteering with the IRS to help people in need file their taxes. However, his favorite job was being Papa to his six grandchildren. He enjoyed bowling, softball, Minnesota sports teams, telling stories and fishing. He had a special place in his heart for Lake Kabikwabik in Ontario, Canada which he would fly into with his annual fishing group. He loved to travel, especially spending time in Hawaii with his wife and family. Known for his “Dave-isms” he had a way of putting a smile on everyone’s face. He loved good cigars, mediocre bourbon and drowning minnows (which he called walleye fishing). He also wanted the record to show that his sister cheated him at Monopoly when they were children. We will carry Papa with us in our hearts always.
In lieu of flowers, Dave's family is accepting donations to his memorial fund at GoFundMe. All donations will be given to charities that were meaningful to him.
Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, January 9, 2024 at 12 PM with Visitation one hour prior to service, from 11 AM - 12 PM at Wulff Woodbury Funeral Home, 2195 Woodlane Dr., Woodbury, MN 55125. Private Interment will follow at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
