He was born January 23, 1947, in Akron, Ohio, the second son of the late Hugo (Harry) and Blanche Cunningham Lang.
Harry is survived by and deeply missed by his beloved wife of almost 38 years, Robin (nee Stinson) and children Andrea (Randy) Tavares, Sarah (Ross) Schuchard, Katharine Williams, Michael (Dana) Lang and David Scott Lang, and was predeceased by his infant son David Philip Lang; Forever cherished and remembered as Papa by his 9 grandchildren - Jillian and Jordan Tavares; John, Lila and Anna Schuchard; Elliott and Clive Williams; and Sullivan and Ozzy Lang; brothers David and Joe Lang.
He proudly served his country after being drafted during the Vietnam War and found special meaning in comparing stories with his sons, sharing a unique bond as fellow U.S. Army veterans. A lifelong student of military history, he shared his vast, encyclopedic knowledge of the Civil War and both World Wars with his sons. Some of his fondest memories were guiding them on trips to historic battlefields - Gettysburg, Antietam, and most recently to Yorktown - where his stories and anecdotes brought the past vividly to life.
His military service gave him experience with the telecommunications industry, which he leveraged during his career with AT&T and Coopers & Lybrand, and then as an IT consultant for many of the Fortune 100 companies across the country.
His greatest joy, however, came from time spent with family, especially creating experiences that became lasting memories for his children. He was a passionate cheerleader for his children’s activities of all kinds, a chef at team dinners and family gatherings (including wearing the chef’s jacket), and always a willing and compassionate adviser to any and all. His love of 1960s music, Charles Wysocki jigsaw puzzles, laughing out loud during Minion movies, and collecting treasures large and small remain an enduring part of his legacy.
Our family will be forever grateful to the amazing care team at the Minnesota Fairview Cancer Center in Woodbury, who walked with us with grace and expertise during the six months of treatment.
Visitation will be at 9 AM, followed by a funeral service at 10 AM on Tuesday, October 21, at King of Kings Lutheran Church in Woodbury, MN. Internment with full military honors at the Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Disabled American Veterans, which celebrates his service and helps veterans in need, or to Blood Cancer United, which honors Harry’s journey with leukemia and supports research that brings hope of longer remissions for others facing this disease. The family is deeply grateful for your love, prayers, and support during this time.
