J. Patrick Schaffer, 84, of St. Paul, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Saturday, July 18, 2020.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of nearly 55 years, Rita, and siblings, Mary Alice, Msgr Greg, John, and Jim.

Pat will be missed by his children; Fr. Greg, Jim (Nikki), Dan (April), Ann (Dan) Lindblad, and Mari (Bill) Hirschuber; grandchildren, Kyle, Nick, McKenna, Ben, Ryan, Caleb, & Noah; great-grandson, Oliver; siblings, Beth, Judy, Geri, Ann, Monica, and Bob O’Brien and many nieces and nephews.

Pat made many friends while working at Brown & Bigelow and Deluxe. Pat was an avid Master Gardener, talented artist, and active in the community on the East Side of St Paul.

His strong devotion to his Catholic faith was demonstrated in his participation in church activities and his involvement with his brother Greg’s mission in San Lucas Toliman, Guatemala. Pat enjoyed spending time at the MN State Fair which included working many years at the St. Bernards dining hall.

A soft spoken personality, easy going nature, along with a great sense of humor are attributes of Pat that will be greatly missed. He never ate a meal he didn’t like!

A heartfelt thank you to the wonderful staff at The Pillars. We appreciate the tremendous care and compassion that was given to Pat and the family.

I loved the pictures. Your dad was such a nice man. I remember him showing me his garden and how good the strawberries tasted and telling me how to make a raised garden. The quiet people are the true gems and he was one.

We’re so sorry to hear about the loss of Uncle Pat. I have many fond memories that I will always cherish of all our family get togethers during the holidays for so many years. We’re also very disappointed we won’t be able to attend the memorial and funeral mass due to COVID-19 restrictions. It is difficult for Aunt Marian not to be able to attend as well. Please know we are thinking of your entire family and that you are in our thoughts and prayers.
