Judy was born on March 25, 1943, in Volga, South Dakota, to Arthur and Edith (Sandberg) Bjorkman. When Judy was just five months old, her father passed away suddenly from a heart attack. She spent her early childhood on a farm near Arlington, South Dakota, attending country school #8 and worshiping at Spring Lake Covenant Church. At age 12, her family moved to De Smet, South Dakota, where Judy attended De Smet Public School and became an active member of the United Methodist Church. It was during these formative years that Judy’s unwavering faith and deep love for family took root—two guiding forces that shaped every chapter of her life.
After graduating from De Smet High School in 1961, Judy moved to Huron, where she worked at a dress shop while attending business school. In 1965, she married William “Bill” Hofer, the love of her life. They made their first home in Huron, welcoming their daughter Carla in 1968. A move to Worthington, Minnesota, soon followed, where their family grew to include daughter Amy and son Justin. Bill and Judy later made a warm and loving home on an acreage outside Rushmore, Minnesota, where family gatherings, home-cooked meals, and countless memories filled the years. Judy ran a daycare for 8 years and then went on to work at the First State Bank of Rushmore for 23 years.
Judy’s greatest joy was her family. She is survived by her three children: Carla (Dave Kermode) Boris, Amy (Brian) Fisher, and Justin Hofer; her cherished grandchildren: Seth and Ryan Boris, Allison and Brady Fisher, and Henry and Evryn Hofer; and step-grandchildren Nolan Kermode and Kayla (Garret) Fitzsimmons. She is also survived by her siblings Marilyn Hunter, Curt (Sue) Asleson, and Randy (LuAnn) Asleson, along with many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A devoted Christian, Judy was a faithful member of every church she joined, pouring her heart into women’s groups, Bible studies, and ministries. Her faith in her Lord and Savior shone brightly through her life—she was steadfast, compassionate, nurturing, and always ready to lend a listening ear or helping hand. While her love for Christ anchored her, her children, grandchildren, extended family, and friends filled her heart to overflowing.
Judy was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Edith, her husband, Willam (Bill) Hofer, and her son-in-law, David Boris.
Those who knew Judy will remember her warm laughter, her gentle wisdom, and her boundless love. She would want us to be kind, to cherish each other deeply, and, above all, to keep Christ at the center of our lives.
