Loving Husband, Father & Grandfather
Age 65
Passed to his Eternal Home on Thurs., 2/23 in Regions Hospital, St. Paul. Preceded in death by parents, Kenneth & Dora; brother, Kenton. Grateful for having shared Larry’s life are wife, Bonna; daughter, Tara (Tom) Schlattman; brother, Curtis (Susan); precious grandchildren, Caden & Karsen Schlattman; beloved sisters-in-law, Donna Carlson (Ted Peterson), Carol; and beloved nephews and nieces.
Larry grew up on a farm in South Dakota with his two brothers. He helped his father with harvesting and caring for livestock, chickens, cows and hogs. He and his brothers worked hard but also played hard on the farm. He had many fond memories of his childhood.
He graduated from Northern State University in Aberdeen SD with a Business degree. While in college he played guitar and sang in a small band. He continued to enjoy playing his electric guitar and playing his record collection through his retirement.
He married his wife, Bonna on June 2, 1968. His wife grew up with him and they had many common interests and friends. It was a blessed marriage with few if any bumps in the road.
Larry served in the US Army as a Military Policeman from January 1969 through September 1970. He very much enjoyed his military time but not enough to make it a career.
After his military service he enjoyed a long and successful career as a Federal Agent for the IRS in Minneapolis and St. Paul. During this career, he also serviced as Federal Union Credit board member and treasurer. He made many lifetime friends during this career and continued to enjoy spending time with them after retirement.
He and his wife were blessed with a daughter, Tara in 1976. They were again blessed with a son-in-law, Tom followed by two wonderfull grandchildren, Caden and Karsen. He retired at the age of 55.
He became a parttime employee at Prestwick golf course in Woodbury enjoying the outdoors, golf and his fellow workers. As was his nature, Larry took this job pretty seriously and frequently got up as early as 4 AM to ensure that everyone was aware of the course activities for the day. Getting on the mower as the sun rose was fun for him. He looked forward to the work and spending Wednesday afternoons golfing with the other mowers.
Larry loved spending time with his grandchildren, as well as his extended family and friends. He had a special bond with his first and only grandson, Caden. They spent a lot of precious time together in those first 2 to 3 years. He also loved his only granddaughter, Karsen although Grandma was a bit more in tune with her obsession with dolls and pink clothes.
He loved hunting and fishing with his brothers and nephews. They went to Canada fishing a couple of years and always had an annual weekly summer fishing trip in South Dakota. He never missed an October pheasant hunt and a couple of trips every year in November for ducks and geese. After he retired, those hunting trips became extended and he spent more time in South Dakota in the fall than in Minnesota. He also took a trip to Alaska fishing with his brother a little over a year ago and they had a great time.
He and his wife also enjoyed golfing and vacationing in AZ and in FL. They enjoyed individual golf leagues in the summer at Prestwick as well as a weekly couple’s league.
Larry was also involved with his church and served in many capacities including treasurer and president. The church family became very important to them particularly in the last couple of years. He and his family were blessed with the Lord’s promise that He would always be with us and care for us. That precious gift of grace sustained Larry with comfort and peace.
