Leona Marie Hughes

February 6, 1928 – January 4, 2025
Obituary of Leona Marie Hughes
IN THE CARE OF

Wulff Woodbury Funeral Home

Leona, age 96, passed away peacefully on the morning of January 4, 2025 after a long and fulfilling life.

Born on February 6, 1928, the oldest daughter of Bernard Simon and Luella Grace (Handshaw) Maxwell, Leona touched on a very nice life in Saint Paul with her six brothers and sisters. She visited often with her grandparents, Jesse and Grace Handshaw in Lake City, Minnesota.

Leona and her husband, Gene LaMont Hughes had eleven children, and their family grew to include 77 descendants. She is survived by 7 children: Linda (Thomas), Diane (Henry), Sandra, Stephen, Sherry, Michele (Terry), and Tammy (Michael); 23 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great grandchildren. Her surviving siblings are Charles, Lawrence, and Pamela.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Bernard and Luella Maxwell; husband, Gene; four sons, Gene Jr., Gary, Kevin, and David; grandson, Shawn; son-in-law, Robert; daughter-in-law, Jacqueline; sister, Darleen; and brothers, Gerald and Darrell.

The Hughes home was a frequent gathering place for the family, who came together not only for holidays but throughout the year, sharing plenty of food. Leona and Gene enjoyed family times, playing cards and bingo, camping at Cross Lake, their pets, watching birds, and tending to their flower gardens.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Good Samaritan Society for the very kind and loving care given to Leona. We are so greatly appreciative.

Leona will be laid to rest beside her husband, Gene, at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, section 13, site 2085. There will be a private service for the family.
