Man La Ng was living her best life in good health up until she died unexpectedly and peacefully at home on March 9, 2024. She was born in Foshan city in Shunde district of the Guangdong province in China. In her mid-20s, while living in Hong Kong, she started corresponding with her future husband Sai Foo Ng, and later moved to Montreal in 1964 to marry him.
Man La and Sai had three sons in Montreal before moving to Duluth where they had a daughter. They eventually settled in Brainerd, Minnesota where they opened their own restaurant, the Silver Dragon in 1980. Man La was a determined and shrewd businesswoman who overcame tremendous adversity; the whole family worked long, hard hours to make the restaurant successful. Man La and Sai enjoyed boating with the family on weekends and took well deserved vacations together each December (without the kids) to different parts of the world. After the passing of her husband in 1995, she continued to run the restaurant until she retired in 2000. Every year, Man La's family returns to Brainerd to pay respects to her husband, Sai.
In 2006, Man La moved to Prescott, Wisconsin to live with her daughter and son-in-law, but also regularly traveled to the warmer states to visit her sons like a true snow bird. In 2018, she moved into her townhouse in Woodbury, Minnesota which was walking distance to the YMCA. She loved the friendships and exercising at the Y, especially swim class, which brought out her vibrant joyful side. Her routine included weekends with her daughter and son-in-law, walking, shopping, getting dressed up for any reason whatsoever, and being fun-loving. She will be missed by many.
Man La was the fourth child in a family of nine children and is preceded in death by her father, Poon Kit Ting, her mother, Sook Ching Pak, and five of her siblings. She is survived by her brothers, Peter and Newman, and sister, Lilly.
Man La leaves behind her first son, Dr. William Eng and his wife, Ho Sang and grandsons, Samuel and Theodore; second son, Raymond and his wife, Nikki; third son, Lance and his wife, Lynn and grandsons, Aysen and Landyn; and daughter, Kathy and her husband, Kory. She will be laid to rest next to her husband, Sai Foo, at Evergreen Cemetery in Brainerd, Minnesota.
A memorial service will be held on March 30, 2024 from 10:30am-12:00pm at Wulff Funeral Home (2195 Woodlane Dr, Woodbury MN 55125).
