Richard passed away peacefully 1/7/2011 at home surrounded by family & friends in Woodbury, MN. He was born 4/3/1943 in Wendell, MN, & graduated from Elbow Lake High School in 1961 where he excelled in track, football & basketball. He attended South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD on a basketball scholarship where he was a member of the 1963 National Championship basketball team, graduating in 1965. He married Bonnie Knutson on 9/5/1964. For most of his career, Richard worked for the St. Paul Insurance Companies as a claims executive & retired in 1995. Although his larger than life physical presence was obvious, those who spent any time with Richard soon learned that his physical size was dwarfed by the strength of his character & the gentleness of his soul. Survived by devoted wife of 46 years, Bonnie; loving children, Sarah (David) Gette & Matthew (Tiffany); grandchildren, Olivia, Andrew, Zachary, Sigur & a player to be named later; nieces & nephews. Funeral service Wednesday 11 AM at WOODBURY LUTHERAN CHURCH, 7380 Afton Rd., Woodbury. Visitation Tuesday 6-8 PM & 1 hour prior to service, all to be held at the church.
