Stewart Adams Batt

Stewart (Stu) Adams Batt, devoted husband and loving father and grandfather passed away February 7th, 2021.

Stewart is survived by his wife Antoinette, sons Alexander (wife Carol) and Anthony, daughter Leslie (husband John), granddaughter Julia (husband Rodal), grandson Oliver, and many nieces and nephews. Stewart was born August 15th 1921 in Buffalo, New York, a child of the Great Depression. Stewart was a devout Roman Catholic, attending Canesius College from 1939-1942, Princeton University from 1943-1944 and Harvard Medical School from 1945-1946. During WWII, Stewart worked stateside in the US Army Medical Corps.

Stewart moved to San Diego in 1949 to work as a Copy Editor for the San Diego Journal. Stewart worked for United Press International (UPI) covering the West Coast and KFMB (CBS) as the San Diego Assignment Editor, where Channel 8 was the first news station to put film footage with news stories. In 1954 Stewart married Antoinette (Nettie) Demming at St Bridget’s Catholic Church in Pacific Beach. Over the next decades, Stewart started “Brown and Frank” ice cream with brother Clem, was the News Director for CBS Channel 3 in Madison Wisconsin and worked for UW-Madison Vet Science.

Stewart retired to San Diego and Las Vegas where he was deeply involved in Christ the King Church. He enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, fishing in Alaska, and backpacking throughout Europe visiting family and friends.

In 2016, Stewart and Nettie moved to River Falls, Wisconsin to be closer to family. Stewart enjoyed watching the news and puffing on his iconic pipe. Stewart received the Last Rites and passed away with his wife of 66 years by his side. There will be a small memorial when the pandemic allows the family to reunite.

Stuart, Clem, Garth and Bill (my Dad) brothers built The Sea Bat and would go fishing regularly off coast of San Diego. My Dad painted this painting of them in The Sea Bat ❤️
