Sending love and our thoughts from the McGann clan in Australia.  We all love Barry's warmth, friendliness and your family's generosity and are saddened that he has left us too soon. 

Paul and I remember our last trip to New York, wandering in awe  around the Dyker Heights light show with Barry, Christina and Georgia, we couldn't believe the magic.  And we were let in on the news that Henry was on his way. 

We will always remember you Barry.




Today we said farewell to our beloved Barry who over the years have shown us what it means to be a great father, husband, friend, colleague, and community member.  He was smart, funny, opinionated and generous to a fault. His household was always open to anyone. He was a fellow Eagle Scout and he and his wife ran their household like a well-oiled troop driven by love, discipline, education and kindness. And lots of food - all kinds of food.  He fought a heroic battle against ALS and was liberated from it at a very young age of 54.  I will miss my talks with him.   He impacted many lives and families, evident from all the people at the cemetery and his house today.  I remember two years ago when we first learned of his ALS and my son Lucas said “It’s like Stephen Hawkins,” then my youngest Leonardo added “the genius String Theory guy!”. Barry interjects “except I’m really not that smart.  Let’s get the meat on the grill, we’re gonna eat good tonite.”  I couldn’t stop laughing.  He was still frisky then.  His youngest son’s baptism three years ago was a celebration to behold. He was such a proud father and husband; he glowed throughout the ceremony as he marveled at his 7 children.  Made me think of how I felt just 6 months ago during my son’s confirmation.  This past summer, as he struggled to breathed, it took him 10 mins just to convey he wanted me to help one of his sons to be part of the staff at Keowa summer scout camp.   He rolled his eyes with impatience. How dare this disease get in the way of his humor and getting some things done.  He struggled, but kept fighting all the way to the end.    Every member of his family are always polite, well-educated, strong, joyful, profound, real and quick to help anyone in need.  What a beautiful legacy he has with his family.  We are indeed fortunate to have had Barry in our world.  May his memory be a blessing to all of us. We love you Barry! Rest In Peace.  Rest in Power. God bless your journey.

I met Barry at work nearly 30 years ago. He was a good Local 3 member as a true humanitarian who approached experiences and challenges in his life equally with optimism and certainty. 

Sending love, strength and solace to all of you. I wish that I could be there in person, but I will be there in heart and spirit. I'll be watching Jeopardy and eating pork buns in my full-body, bubble wrap suit in Barry's honor.
