A Brief Review of the Life of
Daniel R. Kim
December 28, 1930- May 25, 2013
Daniel Kim was born in North Korea on December 28, 1930. At an early age, Mr. Kim began to love reading, studying, and learning. As a teen he bought old American magazines at Korean flea markets and taught himself English.
During his teens, he and his family escaped to South Korea leaving behind a beloved brother and grandparents who got caught behind the rising 38th Parallel. At the age of 20 when the Korean War began, he became employed as an interpreter for the American army, which he enjoyed tremendously.
He married Helen Lee in 1957 and a few years after his first child was born, he fell ill for seven years with tuberculosis. While bedridden, he would listen to Christian radio broadcast. His wife prayed faithfully for him every day, before dawn. God in His mercy cured what the doctors called his "incurable disease".
In 1970, with dim prospects of providing for his family, he immigrated alone to America, which he called "the land of milk and honey". Within one year of working numerous jobs, he saved enough to send for his wife and three daughters.
Mr. and Mrs. Kim labored at menial jobs in this country and together helped plant churches to spread the Gospel. During church services, he felt it his duty to sit in the back row to keep track of the number of new visitors as well as repeat attendees. This was a habit he kept till his last days in church.
He joyfully went out of his way to help the needy and the less fortunate, in his service to Christ.
He loved the USA and became a citizen as soon as he could. In 1976 he was naturalized as a US citizen during America's Bicentennial. He said that "the best citizenship after Heavenly citizenship was American citizenship!" Soon after, he sponsored all of his extended family to come and live in the United States.
He was married 56 years and so loved his wife and family. His great earthly joy and desire was just being with his family. Daniel Kim is survived by his wife, Helen and three daughters, Ellie, Jennifer, and Sharon; also two grandsons, Samuel and Adam.
