Her father owned a Bodega (I only know this because when I asked her how was it for her during The Great Depression years, she said it wasn’t too bad because her dad owned a Bodega). Mom had a younger brother ,Eugene Ortiz, but they were estranged for many years. Mom went to Julia Richman HS on the East Side of Manhattan until 11th gr when she left to go to work to help her mom.Mom would later get her GED in the 1970s,proving it’s never to late.
She met my father Cristino Abril(who came here from Bayamon,Puerto Rico ) in 1948 and they married on March 25,1950. Two years later I was born at the Women’s Infirmary on 15th St &2nd Ave. I am my parents only child.
We lived on the Lower East Side when I was an infant, then moved to Brooklyn and finally moved to Queens, residing first in LIC,then settling in Astoria, where my Mom convinced Dad it’s time we stop paying rent and buy a home. They lived in that home for over 57 years. They raised me and watched as I went to HS,then St John’s College of Pharmacy. During those years Mom began working full time at Alexander’s Dept Store on 59th St and Lexington Ave. ,it’s Flagship Store.Doris was made for retail sales ! She worked there from 1965 until it closed in 1992.It was perfect for her because my Mom loved fashion! She always had a sense of style that was classic and Alexander’s gave her that opportunity to always look her best. Both Dad and I benefitted from her working in “Alex’s”:her discounts saved us $$ (especially when I married my husband Nick in 1975 and she and my mother in law helped us furnish our apartment and later our home)This would continue when she became a proud and doting grandmother to our children,Michael and Kimberly .Unfortunately, her great grandsons would miss out on Alexander’s bounty..but Mom always provided love and presents no matter what.
She loved reading, listening to all types of music and an avid film fan -all gifts she imparted to me and our children .
She left this world on July 4th a day we as Americans celebrate our Independence. And even though she has departed this world we all know that she (as well as my Dad)will always be watching over our family.
A reposing for Doris will be held Wednesday, July 20, 2022 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Thomas M. Quinn & Sons, 41- 45 58th Street, Woodside, NY 11377. A prayer service will occur Wednesday, July 20, 2022 from 12:00 PM to 12:30 PM, 41- 45 58th Street, Woodside, NY 11377. An entombment will occur Wednesday, July 20, 2022 from 1:00 PM to 1:30 PM at St. Michael's Cemetery, 7202 Astoria Boulevard, East Elmhurst, NY 11370.
