Ellen was the youngest child born to Basil Cavallaro and Marianna Cavallaro (nee Cerami) on January 10, 1932 in Queens, New York. Ellen attended public school in Jamaica, Queens and graduated from Queens College with a B.A. in 1953. Upon completing college Ellen began working at Mark Cross in Manhattan and then later joined the Macmillan Company in 1974 as an account representative. Ellen thoroughly enjoyed the travel opportunities afforded to her while working at Macmillan and forged lifelong friendships with several of her associates. The travel bug prevailed throughout much of her life... she enjoyed travels to Italy, Greece, Alaska, California, Florida, Maine, just to name a few.
Ellen retired from the Macmillan Company in 1994 and began a second career as a tax accountant at H. & R. Block in Jackson Heights, New York. She served as Manager of the Northern Boulevard location of H. & R. Block in the years 1997 to 1999. Thereafter, she continued on as a tax professional where she was adept at completing tax returns for clients most recently as February, 2024.
Ellen was predeceased by all of her siblings as well as by her niece Alice Farren and great niece Tara Volpe. Ellen is remembered lovingly by her nieces and nephews, Joan, Joseph and Anita Volpe, Annemarie Mortilla, Michael Cavallaro and Robert D'Amico as well as many great nieces and nephews and their children.
Her presence at H. & R. Block is greatly missed by all of the team at the local office, especially Ninalynne, Roz, Laura, Mary, Daniel and Hillary along with scores of loyal tax clients who consistently requested that Ellen prepare their taxes for the last thirty years!
It would be remiss not to mention several of Ellen's friends with whom she enjoyed travels, outings, dinners and loving companionship. She is sorely missed by Miriam, Nancy, Maritza and Michael, George, Karen, Renita, Anna, Eleanor and Vinny to name a few. Ellen had the uncanny ability to remain friends with and stay in contact with several friends from her elementary school days and, later on, with their children.
Ellen was a dog lover par excellence and enjoyed the companionship of many dogs throughout her lifetime. Her dogs were her children, each with very distinct personalities and each loved unconditionally. She supported several agencies with rescue dogs, including the A.S.P.C.A. and the North Shore Animal League from which she adopted her dogs Kelly and Ginger.
A celebration of the extraordinary life of Ellen Cavallaro will take place at a date soon to be determined.
