Grace Armetta Fields, 95, of Woodside, NY and Sunrise Mill Basin, passed away on Thursday, March 13, 2025, following a brief illness. Grace was predeceased by her parents, Vito and Carmela (Guarraci) Armetta; her husband, John Ilkka Fields, her brother, Philip Armetta, her nephew, Carl Armetta, and countless dear family members and friends. She is survived by her devoted son Eric, daughter-in-law Julie, and her two grandsons, Luca and Alexei, whom she adored. She is also survived by her loving siblings, Josephine-Lil Fioretta and Joseph Armetta. Grace leaves her eleven nieces and nephews and spouses, and numerous cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Grace was born in Brooklyn on Amity Street in a cold water flat overlooking New York Harbor and the Statue of Liberty. When Grace began schooling, she spoke Sicilian; in later years, when anyone asked her nationality, she would proudly proclaim that she was an American. Due to her father’s illness, as the eldest sibling, Grace was taken out of school at the age of fifteen to support her family by working in a doll factory. Her husband John passed away when she was seven months pregnant. Raising Eric as a single mother, Grace went back to school to get her degree while also working. As an RN at Elmhurst Hospital, Grace worked tirelessly in the Emergency Department for over thirty-five years. She was proud of and cherished her time at Elmhurst and the relationships she formed there. She retired at the age of eighty. Grace was a long-time parishioner and a choir member at St. Mary’s Winfield, an active member of St. Mary’s Golden Age and Self-help Senior Center in Maspeth. Grace was fiercely protective of her family and was a loyal friend.
Relatives and friends are invited to call on Tuesday, March 18th from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Kennedy-Roth Funeral Home in Woodside. On Wednesday, March 19th, Grace’s Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:00 am at Blessed Virgin Mary Help of Christians-St. Mary’s in Woodside. Following the mass, she will be laid to rest next to her husband John, at Long Island National Cemetery in Farmingdale.
