

Jerzy Maksymowicz was born January 1st, 1932 in the town of Zimna Woda, Poland. Orphaned early in his life he survived WW2 and made his way with the support of family members. He studied architecture at the Polytechnical University in Wroclaw where he went on to become Chief Architect in the Buildings Depart. He met and married Irena Sas in 1957. They left Poland after the Prague Spring of 1968 and worked their way to the US. Their only son, Christopher was born in 1969. The marriage ended in 1985. A year later, Jerzy remarried Terezinha Faria, originally of Belo Horizonte, Brasil is his widow today. He is survived by his son, Christopher Maksymowicz and daughter-in-law, Victoria Gilbert, as well as his grandson, Casimir Maksymowicz, and one of his brothers, Adam Maksymowicz, and cousins, Marina Sypek, Teresa and Agnieska Maksymowicz, Beata Pospiech.
In the United States, Jerzy worked hard to reinvent his life, starting with driving a taxi while he prepared for his architectural certification. He worked for multiple firms, had his own practice and served as a NYC Department of Buildings inspector. Among his notable accomplishments are East River Tower and the New Yorker Hotel. He was an avid reader, historian and even ran for President of Poland one time. He will be buried in Poland.
A funeral mass will be held on November 28, 2025 at 10 am at St Thomas More in Manhattan, NY. A reception will follow.
