Alice Edna Drifmeyer, of Woodstock, GA, passed away suddenly on June 21, 2026, at the age of 76. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend. She is survived by her husband of 37 years, Fred Drifmeyer; her daughters, Janis Roberto (Lumsden) and her husband Scott, along with their son Cameron; and Moira Garcia (Lumsden) and her husband Jay. She also leaves behind her brother-in-law Jeffrey Drifmeyer; two stepsons and their families; several nieces and nephews; as well as many other cherished relatives and friends.
Alice was born on October 27, 1949 in Boothbay Harbor, Maine to Harris Mathews Delano and Beatrice Edna Delano (both deceased). She is also predeceased by her three sisters Mary Hallinan (Delano), Sarah Delano and Carol Younts (Delano).
Alice graduated from Boothbay Harbor Regional High School in 1967 and earned a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Maine, Orono, in 1971. While attending college, she met her first husband, Dale Lumsden. Together they settled on Cape Cod, where Alice devoted herself to raising their daughters as a stay-at-home mother before transitioning into work as a substitute teacher. In future years, Alice found her true professional calling as a social worker with the state of Massachusetts, where she dedicated herself to assisting underserved populations in need of transitional support.
Alice married Fred Drifmeyer later in life, and they shared 37 wonderful years together. The couple spent most of their married life in Centerville, Massachusetts, before relocating to the South in recent years to be closer to family. Music was a central part of their lives; they sang together in several choirs, including The MasterSingers of Cape Cod. Alice deeply cherished the friendships she formed through these musical groups and her church communities, which provided her with spiritual fulfillment and joy.
Alice was a woman of warmth and kindness, known for her steady presence and a smile that could light up any room. Her sense of humor left an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to share in her laughter. A lover of wildlife and nature, Alice found immense joy in tending to her garden and window boxes, which were always adorned with the most beautiful flowers. She delighted in feeding and conversing with the birds daily, finding peace and connection in their company.
Her compassion extended beyond nature to animals in need. Alice had a special place in her heart for cats, generously opening her home to many strays and shelter felines over the years. Her kindness and generosity toward both people and animals were hallmarks of her character.
Alice’s friends and family are deeply saddened by her loss but take comfort in the legacy she leaves behind. They encourage all who knew her to honor her memory by caring for others—both human and animal—and by lifting up her spirit through song whenever possible.
A small service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Cartersville, Georgia on Saturday, August 8, 2026 at 2 pm. A Celebration of Life will take place at the Pilgrim Congregational Church in Harwichport, Massachusetts on Cape Cod on Saturday, May 8, 2027 at 2 pm. There will be receptions to follow in the fellowship halls of each church. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Alice’s memory to MSPCA Cape Cod, a local wildlife rescue, or a musical program in your area.
