Benito Nieves Baez, a proud World War II veteran, devoted public servant, Christian, counselor and cherished family man, passed away peacefully at the age of 102 in Woodstock, leaving behind a legacy of courage, service, and love.
Born in Puerto Rico in 1923, Benito bravely defended the Panama Canal during World War II . His service during this critical chapter of world history reflected his unwavering dedication to his fellow soldiers and to the country he deeply loved.
During his 23-year military career, Benito worked in medical research and served with honor in the Medical Corps, contributing both scientifically and compassionately to the health and well-being of those around him. Upon retiring from the military, he continued his life of service by leading a training department for the Puerto Rico government. There, he oversaw staff and managerial development programs across various enterprises, shaping the skills and futures of professionals throughout the island.
A devout Christian, he founded two churches in Puerto Rico to share the word of the Lord along with Benita Nieves his loving wife for 66 years who passed in 2008.3
More than his career achievements, Benito will be remembered for his heartfelt devotion to his family, his passion for helping others and his love for America. A gifted counselor and mentor, he always offered a listening ear and a wise word, and inspired those around him to live with purpose, humility, and strength.
Benito is survived by his daughter, Priscilla Nieves; his son, Eliecer Nieves; and his beloved grandchildren: Christopher Nieves, Christopher Cardwell, Angela Nieves, Nathaniel Nieves, Edwin Nieves Jr, Alexandra Cruz and Blenda Nieves. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren: Bryanna Nieves, Haleigh Nieves, Kaitlyn Nieves, Isabella Nieves, Avery Nieves, Dre Nieves, Xander Nieves, Senna Cardwell, Larissa Nieves, Suleika Nieves, Edwin J. Nieves III, Jacob Nieves, Darian Lee Cruz, Ana Litzy Cruz and William J Torres.
He leaves behind a family that is proud to carry forward his values of honor, service, love of God and compassion. Benito Nieves Baez lived a life of profound purpose, and his memory will continue to inspire all who knew and loved him.
A service will be held in his honor and burial with full military honors in Georgia National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to organizations supporting veterans and their families such as UnitedMilitaryCare.com.
