Betty was born to the late Marvin and Ruth Brigman on April 9, 1931. She was the oldest of 4 children. Betty came from humble beginnings and learned to be independent and self-sufficient at a young age. She appreciated the world around her and realized that the simple things in life were the most meaningful.
Betty, being the outgoing person that she was, later decided that she wanted to learn to fly. She applied herself and met her future husband, George, in Raleigh, North Carolina. The couple married and she had three miracles (doctors had informed her that she would never bear children). Although she would have loved to have a daughter, Betty was adapt at raising her three sons as she was quite the tomboy herself. However, she was blessed to help George raise his two daughters as her own. She and George built their home together in the 50’s and the family considered it to be the Mini Farm of East Cobb. They raised and cared for emus, horses and chickens. Betty’s Rhode Island reds provided the freshest eggs in all of Cobb county.
Betty had a loving heart and she cared for everyone and everything she came across. She often took in stray animals, would mend them and free them back into their natural habitat. She was also known to provide food and shelter to anyone who needed a helping hand. Having been raised in the depression era, she knew what it was like to go without and wanted to share everything that she had with others.
Betty was known throughout her life as “Flower” because of her green thumb. She had an amazing ability to grow flowers, tend to vegetables and root plants of all types. As she aged and became a resident of the Benton House of Woodstock, she enjoyed working in several raised gardens that her son Stuart built for her at the assisted living facility. She shared her fresh, vine ripened vegetables with other residents and the chefs who happily added them to their daily dishes. She was quick to make friends and loved living a positive and simple life.
Betty’s memory will be cherished by her family, friends and the loving staff of Benton House of Woodstock.
