June 11, 1977 – March 24, 2021
Damon was born at Sacred Heart Hospital in Cumberland, Maryland June 11, 1977. He and his family moved to Marietta, Georgia in 1982. Damon graduated from Walton High School in 1996 and in 2001 he graduated from Georgia Southern with a Batchelor’s in Construction Management. He was a Safety Engineer for Brasfield & Gorrie and later Championed the Light Truck Loads Department for NTG until his passing. He was a lover of all things sports and an avid hunter/outdoorsman. Damon was a quiet soul who would always offer to help anyone if they asked. He never had anything bad to say about anyone and always saw the positive side of the matter at hand. So much so that when his diagnosis came about, he said “…well, this is just another thing I’ll have to work through.” In July 2020, Damon was diagnosed with Choroidal Melanoma. Through later PET Scan, MRI and Liver biopsy it was found to be a Stage 4 or Metastatic Uveal Melanoma. He fought hard with hope through various meetings with Doctors and a later treatment in Reno, Nevada in December 2020. All of this with the love and support of family and beloved friends. Throughout this entire process his focus was his son, Austin and it still is. He loved that young man with all his heart. They even went on Austin’s first hunting trip where Austin trophied his first deer. Damon was VERY PROUD that day. Damon spent the last weeks of his life with his Family and passed away on Wednesday, March 24, 2021, quietly holding his Mother’s hand. Damon is survived by his son Austin and Austin’s mother, Rebecca Volkerding; his father & mother, John & Sharon Volkerding; his brother and his wife, Kevin & Maria Volkerding. He is also survived by nieces and nephews and extended family. The Family will be receiving guests to pay their respects from 6 to 8pm on Saturday, March 27, 2021 at Woodstock Funeral Home (8855 Main Street, Woodstock, GA 30188). Masks are required and the dress is casual. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions in memory of Damon to the American Cancer Society, https://www.cancer.org/ A Celebration of Life event will be held on April 17, 2021. Time and Location to be determined.

Our deepest sympathy to Rebecca, Austin and the Volkerding Family. May you be comforted by family and friends during this difficult time. It was a pleasure to have met Damon at a joyous occasion several years ago. Peace and love.
